Bookies Win Big On Boyle Loss

Published 31 May 2009 by Angela Cordy

Bookies the world over are smiling all the way to the bank after red hot favorite in Britain's got talent Susan Boyle was beaten in a surprising upset.

An overwhelming favorite after capturing the hearts and minds of viewers the world over, the unlikely looking diva was expected to comfortably win the final of the UK reality/talent show on the weekend. Bookmakers had her at odds on to win the event in the face of a mountain of money being bet on Boyle. Had she won, many bookmakers would have taken a big hit.

And it wasn't just the UK bookmakers who offered the Susan Boyle betting line. Boyle became a hit the world over with early performances in the UK talent show. American's were won over by Boyle's angelic voice and ungainly appearance, and US bookmakers like sportsbook.com opened betting lines on the event with Boyle as a short odds favorite.

Boyle has been likened to a female version of Paul Potts who also shot to stardom on Britain's Got Talent.

But unlike Potts, Boyle lost favor with UK viewers and could only manage 2nd place. First place, and the 100,000 pound winner's prize went to dance group Diversity. Diversity were paying 16 to 1 at Sportingbet.com, one of many UK based book makers who did very well from the upset result.
